mahabali's visit

onam is d main function of keralities.we celebrate it wit flower carpets, food in bananna leaves, onam songs bla bla bla...
d myth behind the festival is dat a king named mahabali once ruled kerala.he was so good dat all people were very happy.there was no corruption,no malice and no hatred dat the Gods saw it and they became envious.one day a God(vamanan) came down to Mahabali and said"I want to set my foot on three things and conquer it.
Mahabali thought about it and said"yes Lord, you can set foot on the earth and that place is yours".
vamanan expanded himself and set foot on all the earth and conquered it.
then mahabali said "you can set foot on the sky"
vamanan again grew in size and conquered the sky.
Vamanan:"Now where do I conquer?
the kind hearted Mahabali said "you can now set your foot on me Lord"
and thus he was pushed down to hell.but before he went he asked permission if he could vissit his people once a year.and it was granted.
and thus we celebrate onam when mahabali visits kerala again.
thats the story for all of you who dint know.
today dat is to say one week before onam i had the opportunity of seeing mahabali.but this one was not walking or climbing steps from hell.he was in a Chevrolet stuck up in a traffic block in kaloor!sitting majestically and waving at his people.
at this age where even a lower middle class family can afford a car with the coming of the nano,y shud poor mahabali alone walk with his old fashioned umbrella?

the legend behind onam is apparently a little off -- vamanan did not ask for three places/things to conquer, he actually asked for "three steps of land (moonnu adi mannu)"...a minor difference, if you will. but overall, a good read.
